The Committee on Political Economy was established in September 2025 at the request of 51 members of the German Economic Association.
Objectives of the committee
The objectives of the Committee for Political Economy include, among others:
- The development and discussion of new topics in the field of political economy.
- The promotion of academic exchange and the continuing education of members in new aspects of political economy.
- The support, mentoring, and professional development of younger academics in the field of political economy.
- The promotion of excellence and innovation in teaching, as well as the support of public relations and education on economic issues in the field of political economy.
In addition, we strive to cooperate across the boundaries of economics and political science. It is particularly important to us to strongly and sustainably promote young academics (especially women) in the field, both within and through the committee.
Definition of Political Economy
The committee’s area of interest, political economy, examines the interactions between economic processes and political structures. These structures include institutions, various groups and individual actors.
Thus, the following research topics are the focus of interest:
- Voters, candidates, interest groups
- Interaction between the legislature and the executive, bureaucracy and the court system
- Interaction between political failure and market failure, including protests and conflicts between political actors
- Politics and macroeconomics, international political economy, international relations and conflict
- Historical and comparative development of political systems and non-democracies
- Interaction between the media and political structures
